Agent quickstart

This guide takes an administrator from a running Scipio 4.0 server to a working agent connection in five steps. It covers Claude Code, Claude Desktop, Cursor, VS Code, and any other client that speaks MCP over Streamable HTTP.

1. Check the server#

Open https://<host>/admin/control/McpServers as an administrator. The page lists every MCP server profile and its tools. Each application has its own endpoint: /ordermgr/mcp, /accounting/mcp, /cms/mcp, /shop/mcp, and so on. The hub is /admin/mcp.
Confirm the server runs behind HTTPS. A plain HTTP request is refused unless mcp.allowInsecure=true in framework/mcp/config/mcp.properties (development only).
When a reverse proxy terminates TLS, set mcp.trustedProxies to the proxy addresses. Only those addresses may assert X-Forwarded-Proto: https.

2. Create a user for the agent#

The seed user scp-agent (group SCIPIO_AGENT) exists after the seed data load. It has read access to every back-office application and no write permission.
For an agent that must write, create a dedicated user login and put it in a security group with the needed <APP>_UPDATE permissions, plus MCP_ACCESS, MCP_GATEWAY and OFBTOOLS_VIEW. Grant MCP_CODE_WRITE only when the agent must edit CMS templates or scripts.
Never give an agent the system or admin login. Tokens for system are refused.

3. Create a token#

Open https://<host>/admin/control/McpTokens.
Fill in the user login, a token name, the webapps the token may use (* for all), the read-only flag, the expiry (default 90 days, maximum 365) and, for a shop token, a spend cap (maxOrderAmount).
Click “Create Token”. Copy the token now. The page shows it once, together with ready-made connection snippets that already contain the token.

4. Connect the client#

Open https://<host>/admin/control/McpSkills. It shows the hub endpoint and one snippet per client. Replace <token> with the token from step 3.

This page describes how Scipio 4.0 secures agent access through MCP, and what an operator must do before and during production use. Read Agent quickstart for the setup steps.

Principles#

A token is a user login. An agent has exactly the permissions of that user. No permission comes from the token itself.
Default deny. A call passes only when every gate in the policy engine allows it.
One rule for every endpoint. The hub and the application endpoints apply the same policy.
Everything is audited. Every tool call, denied or not, writes one McpAuditLog row.
Executable code is a separate permission. CMS templates and scripts need MCP_CODE_WRITE.

Permissions and groups#

Marks the class that groups a webapp’s requests, views and events. It carries no request data of its own.

Extending agent access

This page shows how to extend framework/mcp: a tool, a service tool, a server profile, a provider, a skill, a path handler, a permission, and how to smoke-test a change with curl. Read framework/resources/templates/mcp/README.txt first for the starter files.

1. Add a tool#

A tool is one static method on a class an @McpServer annotation already covers. Add a public static method under your component’s src/.../mcp/ package; the first parameter is always McpCallContext ctx, each other parameter carries an @McpParam with an explicit name. Annotate the method with @McpTool: a topic, a name in snake_case, a short description, readOnly = true when the tool only reads data. The topic is the tool the agent sees; the name is the action it passes. Every method that names the same topic joins the same tool, which is why one application shows an agent five tools and not fifty. Return a Map, a List, a GenericValue, a String, or an McpResult; convert a raw service result with ResultConverter.toJsonMap(result). Throw McpToolException for a tool error, or McpToolException.denied(msg) for a permission denial.

Every application answers POST /<webapp>/mcp. A tool is one business object; the action argument selects what to do with it. An action marked with * writes data and needs the update permission of the application; the others read. The six core tools (scipio_whoami, scipio_apps, scipio_service, scipio_entity, scipio_document, scipio_admin) exist on every endpoint. Call a tool with {"action": "find", ...}; the schema of each action is in tools/list.

We recommend the use of a web server in combination with Scipio ERP. Although we generally recommend the use of nginx for this purpose, pretty much any webserver can be used. The following templates are meant as a starting point for a webserver configuration.

In addition, in order to prepare your own installation of Scipio ERP to run under a specific domain, you will also be required to tell Scipio ERP to generate URLs according to the new domain settings – regardless of the webserver, you will be required to make these modifications.

OFBiz Migration

So you are currently running an OFBiz installation and want to migrate? That’s great! Luckily, with Scipio ERP the migration from OFBiz is rather straightforward. The code-base is mostly backward compatible and even though we added additional bugfixes, the general structure never changed. There are, however, differences with regards to the rendering engine & themes that will require additional steps to migrate.

General#

We recommend to download a fresh copy of our source . Next you will need to copy over your own components in /hot-deploy & /special-purpose and check for other files you may have changed in your own custom installation. Look out for the database configuration, general.properties or alike, as these will most likely have been modified. Though it is not recommended, many projects change core behaviour inside the OFBiz framework or the applications. We recommend to have a look out for these in your history. Bugfixes aside, you will unfortunately have to migrate these over to Scipio ERP. After a data reseed, you should be able to recompile and run your Scipio ERP installation. The individual steps are outlined below.

Framework (Components containing framework related sources, generic screens and configuratins)
Applications (First-Level Applications; ideally isolated on their own)
Themes (Theme Components)
Hot-Deploy (Your own application space)
Special-Purpose (Second-Level applications; Demo cases; untested or unfinished applications)

Besides a general configuration, we recommend to focus only on the hot-deploy & theme components for your own customization efforts. Because of inheritance, there shouldn’t be a need to directly modify the other applications and this will guerantee compatibility with future releases of the Scipio ERP framework.

Apache Solr

Aurora theme

What Aurora is#

Aurora is the default backend theme of Scipio ERP, in place since version 4.0. It carries no CSS framework: no Bootstrap, no Foundation, no Bulma, and no SASS, npm, or gulp build step. Every rule lives in plain CSS files under webapp/aurora/css/, and the browser reads them as they are.

One design serves every application. The look is graphite and crimson: graphite chrome that lets the red Scipio logo lead, a warm white ground, soft white cards, and big bold titles. Crimson comes from the logo. It never carries text on graphite. It marks the current application, the current menu item and the active tab with a thin bar, and it marks the notification dot. Every text pair passes WCAG AA (4.5:1), and every bar passes 3:1.

Roughly speaking, a service is a piece of code (Java, Simple-method, Groovy, etc.) that can be run inside of the SCIPIO framework. SCIPIO services can also be “exported” as web services (SOAP, REST, XML-RPC, etc.) using the export=”true” option (attribute of the service element in it’s definition). Services can be chained (i.e. call each others), triggered by ECAs (Event Condition Action ) and run asynchronously which gives them a lot of power and allow’s them to be implemented instantly. They always carry the session data in a context variable and can be rolled back if they threw an error (services are transactional with timeout).

Entity Exporters and Importers API

The entity exporters and importers processors API, currently part of the Scipio Data Connect API , provides a framework of java classes and JSON-friendly services for writing, extending and remotely invoking entity exporters/importers for product, party, order, customer and other data. These help interconnect remote systems and applications and simplify data handling.

Several export services named entityExport* (e.g. entityExportProduct, entityExportOrder) are provided that produce a JSON-like record for each main entity read (some exporters accumulate multiple entities per produced record). By default these are returned as a list of records as the “records” OUT attribute. Alongside these are entityImport* import services that create and update entities from JSON-like records from a “records” IN attribute, which usually closely matches the export format (not guaranteed due to custom fields and needs).

Scipio ERP uses fragments of reusable code to put together individual screens. Screens can range from HTML or XML responses to PDFs. The rendering is usually triggered by an event, such a request processed by the controller . A screen consists of:

A “decorator “, that specifies standards in an overarching layout, including other widgets
Multiple “Widgets ” (Code fragments) that make up the inner content of a screen. These can be:

Displaying content within a (flexible) grid is a way of structuring content on a website. The grid itself works as a layer on top of the basic html structure. Everything visible is grouped inside columns and individual cells. The SCIPIO framework uses the standard 12 column grid that is used by modern CSS frameworks, such as foundation or bootstrap.

The SCIPIO framework comes with a set of standard content elements. The elements are largely based on standard html elements so the transition should be straight forward. Since all macros also standardize the html patterns, it is recommended to rely on the SCIPIO tag alternatives for all html. All macros start with “<@”, so tags can be converted by adding an @ in front of them.

The SCIPIO content elements add new options that can be added as attributes. For example, whereas <@table > will create a default table, <@table responsive=true> will generate the very same with added resizing for smaller devices. The available options and their respective use are outlined by this document.

Form Elements

standard/htmlForm.ftlIn the same fashion as the content elements, SCIPIO form elements are meant as a mean to standardize the development of complexe forms. The elements follow standard html patterns, with the only difference being the @field attribute replacing the input tag.

All elements come with additional options, that simplifies their use quite a bit. A good example are the <@field definitions, where each element are wrapped in containing rows and cells, labels added when defined and ids set automatically. The use of the SCIPIO elements largely simplify the creation of complexe forms and standardize the html output for visualization.

Scipio ERP is initially setup to run well for a long range of systems. By default, the system launches with a minimum of allocated memory. The database configuration templates aren’t optimized for your own configuration. All caching mechanisms (browser and internal caching) are largely turned off. Javascript and CSS files are to a large extend left unminified. Even the rendered html is uncompressed. In short: the initial configuration is meant to give a satisfying experience to most users, but it isn’t optimized for performance.

Category Detail

Catalogs and categories are separate entities within Scipio ERP. It is easiest to visualize catalogs as old-time mail-order catalogs, which contain categories in which all of the products are included. Just like mail-order catalogs, catalogs can have a start and expiration date and can have custom configurations, such as a custom stylesheet, which may override the visuals for as long as the catalog is active, or an individual logo. Most importantly, all catalogs act as containers for categories, however, so it is easy to switch entire category trees whenever it is desired. All webstores (online shops) should have at least one catalog assigned at all times.

Scipio CMS now integrates with TinyPNG API, an image compression service that uses smart lossy compression techniques to reduce file size of WEBP, JPEG and PNG files. This integration allows users to automatically crop images, detect focal points and compress their images with ease.

To get started, users simply need to set their API key in a property file. After the setup is complete, the system will automatically handle image compression during upload. The compression is added on top of the existing lossless compression algorithm provided by Scipio and also applies to all image sizes that are created per picture. In order to use the service, users must have a TinyPNG account.

Scipio CMS Integrates TinyPNG Image Compression Service#

AutoTinyPNG, a popular image compression service has been added to the core image processor of Scipio ERP. The integration allows users to reduce file size of their WEBP, JPEG and PNG files without compromising image quality.

TinyPNG uses smart lossy compression techniques in order to reduce the file size of images. By selectively decreasing the number of colors in the image, fewer bytes are required to store the data; resulting in nearly invisible effect. In addition, TinyPNG provides features such as auto cropping of images and focal point detection.

We are glad to announce that ScipioERP will soon fully default to Java 11. Since Java 8 support has substantially waned and new versions of essential libraries now require Java 11, it is recommended to upgrade to Java 11, a stable long-term release. ScipioERP supports stable releases. The build is adapted to running on either versions, but custom components may need code adaptations due to changes in the JDK and developers may need to tweak their development environment. To make migration easier there will be log output including deprecation warnings during the build to guide you in finding classes that need an upgrade. Any warnings from stock ScipioERP files (such as Nashorn) can be ignored and will be removed eventually. All current core functionality has been updated and tested to work with both Java 8 and 11, but Java 8 should be considered deprecated as it will become obsolete and impossible to support due to third-party libraries.

The new Angular Shop Prototype is a show case for a potential shop integration. Granted, it does not recreate the shop faithfully (yet), but we decided to share this with the public regardless. The shop is based on the popular Now UI-kit by Creative Tim, which provides you with very pretty visuals. The toolkit has been enhanced by new product & category pages, as well as a range of custom elements (sliders, product-slider, product preview etc.), which can serve as a foundation for your own custom store.

April saw a general focus on overall code quality & security and put our attention to the human resource application and user profile pages. We realized that an application for keeping track of your own time was missing ever since we launched Scipio, so we decided on bringing back the “Workeffort” application. We began cleaning up the original sources and will shoot for a release very soon. We also updated the URLrewrite functionality for Shop and updated Solr to make it easier to manage.

As development progresses on the much anticipated release 1.14.4 we wanted to draw attention to our product road-map in general. For us, the product road-map equals a dynamic wish-list in which we keep track of all internal development.

We collect all our user feedback and our own wishes on how to enhance the product further. We share this list with everyone and maintain it according to our own progress. The list consists of “planned” (actively developed) and “tentative” (discussed) features. As the next release nears completion, we often push our changes to Github , so that early-adopters can participate in these final stages. If single features require additional development time, we sometimes push them further back to a later release. We are thankful for all the feedback we get.

Scipio ERP relies on Apache Solr as an all purpose search engine and to increase product data lookups throughout the shop component. The benefit of using a search engine in these areas is an immediate performance increase for large data sets, as well as improved search results and additional search functionality.

Recently, there have been security concerns over the Solr version we used (5.x), which is why we updated the component to its latest stable release. We also took the time to reimplement the search functionality as a whole, leading to better search results in general. A complete list of all the Solr version changes can be found on the Apache Solr website.

Move to Java JDK 1.8

In an effort to support newer and updated libraries and several enhancements, SCIPIO ERP will now officially require a Java JDK 1.8 or higher compatible installation.

This change is effective immediately for the Git dev/master branch and will apply to the next versioned release (1.14.4).

This version has become well established and is available for installation on most operating systems, and most users are likely already using it. For operating systems which don’t have central repositories or for very old distributions, the Oracle JDK 1.8 can be downloaded from: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/index.html (Note: Oracle had already discontinued public updates for Oracle JDK 7 for some time; anyone still using that package and not subscribed to their long-term support is urged to update immediately, even if you are running SCIPIO ERP 1.14.3 or lower)

Scipio ERP 1.14.3 is here and it is a major step forward! Our focus has been on the accounting application, which we improved on all levels: new screens, restructured menus, simplified directory structure, cleaned up sources and more. Accounting is now ready for international accounting standards.

Speaking of which, a Scipio Store is going to be available soon, which will open up our enterprise components to everyone. Among them: bootstrap 4 themes for shop and backoffice (Ignite series), nationalized accounting applications & webshops (including their respective chart of accounts for SKR03/04/07, GPC etc), PayPal and more.

Besides our main focus on the accounting application, Release 1.14.3 will also contain a long list of bugfixes and improvements that have been long overdue. One of which will be the updated USPS API, which allows the estimation of shipping prices during an online checkout. In old releases, the missing shipping price calculation would often leave some annoying error messages in the logs and although the screens would let users continue, the prices would be displayed as 0. The users would then continue without having paid the correct shipping prices…

Our user interfaces have come a long way since we introduced Scipio ERP, but one thing has been bugging us for some time: Sometimes menu items lead to pages that are connected to the currently viewed screen. Products, for example, can be configured in such a wide variety, that around 10 menu entries are related to one another. In the past we relied on the sidebar to display these links, which would not always make it easy to spot them in the ever extending list of menu items. To make matters worse, users could potentially get lost while editing an item, simply because they misclicked and ended up losing the page context.

While our work on Release 1.14.3 continues, we are also taking some time to extend our back-catalog on visual themes. We love implementing new themes, as each implementation teaches us valuable insights into how our work performs under real-life conditions.

This time around, we are adding Bootstrap 4 based themes to the mix. Both premium themes “Ignite Shop” and “Ignite Admin” add a new look to the system and are based on the modern flexbox model. As always, the themes will include all sources and will work great as a basis for your own custom theme. Ignite Admin has been added to our demo and will be updated frequently as our work progresses.

With Release 1.14.3 we are eagerly updating many aspects of the software even outside of our current focus on the accounting application.

One of which happens to be modern email templates, which are needed for communication events & are a core aspect of the ecommerce application. Our rendering engine has been extended by an Email renderer, which works similar to the already known FOP (PDF), HTML and Text renderers. Our templating toolkit has been adopted, so that existing screens can be rendered into emails without much trouble.

In preparation for Release 1.14.3 , we have begun to roll-out changes to our Github repository .

Part of which are updated invoice & order templates, which have been awfully neglected in previously releases. The new auto-generated documents are as always customizable and should be well suited for your own corporate identity. The new templates are currently being tested with a large set of data and will be available to a larger public in Release 1.14.3.

We are happy to announce the release of version 1.14.2 of Scipio ERP. The major release focuses on nested (multi-level) menus, screen refactoring & various bugfixes. The update has been gradually rolled out on trunk since Sept. 19th.

Changes since 1.14.1 include:

New powerful, nested (side bar) menu system and screen patterns for all backend applications (see Common and Admin components CommonScreens.xml) – enhanced browsing in all applications
Templating Toolkit (Freemarker): New utilities and directives, numerous enhancements to current directives
Template and screen refactors and fixes for all applications (various)
Integration of Docs into the Admin App Sidebar (Development menu item)
