It is a structured file, an XML document to the
European standard EN 16931, that the receiver&rsquo;s system books without anyone
typing the invoice in. Since 1 January 2025 every business in Germany must be
able to receive one. From 2027 businesses with more than EUR 800,000 turnover
must send their B2B invoices this way, and from 2028 every business must.
Belgium requires e-invoices over Peppol since January 2026, and France starts in
September 2026; both build on the same standard.</p>
